Following are a few maintenance item we beleive you should implement for a fast and clean pc.
Anti-virus program
you have a lot of antivrus software manufacturer to choose from but you know we like to keep it simple and if possible at little or no cost.
AVG and PC Tools are both simple and free antivirus programs (Please don't use PC Tools free antivirus on your server).
Spy-Ware & add-Ware
Only one choice here, Spybot, you can download it from download.com, do a seach for spybot. This little program is awesome, you can scan your system form spyware, root kits, start up apps, loaded activeX and much more. Teatimer is an application that monitors your registry change realtime.
Mac/Windows OS Updates
Enable your auto update on your Mac or Windows machine. In most casses this should be set to auto download and ask to install. This feature will allow background downloads and a pop up for each install request. Review each install by searching online regarding this install if needs be. You should always review the installed update from your control panel.
Personal Firewall
Enable your firewall on your Mac or Windows machine. This should be pre-configured, but sometimes, tricky little spyware, worms or trojan will disable your firewall or disable virus definitions updates etc..
User Accountss
Do yourself a favor, create accounts for each user on the computer. This will make everything easier. By creating independant user accounts, you automatically apply restrictions to other users content. Each user retains their bookmarks, emails and documents independant of other users. This is done automatically with your Mac or windows OS (Check your system preferences or control panel).

Linksys, Netgear or other wireless routers
Lock your wireless router by encrypting your connection. This is easy to do and one of the most diregarded protection against intruders. Please review your manufacturer's operating instructions.
Upgrade your router's firmware
Your router has software that runs your traffic. This software sometimes needs to be updated to new software with new feature or security enhancement. These weaknesses in router software allow malicious operation of the router. This software is called firmware. Firmware have versions similar to windows or mac's OS. Please review your manufacturer's operation manual to upgrade your firmware if needed.
Restrict administration to local network
Your router has a web interface that let's you administer the routers configuration, routing, wireless security and much more. It is important to only allow access to the administration from the local network. It is also important to change the default passwords on the account since most default passwords can be found at www.defaultpasswords.com
